Orthopaedic Surgery in the wake of COVID-19

There is little doubt the emergence of COVID-19 has changed our lives in the short to medium term. Moreover the effect on the ability of surgeons to offer ongoing elective orthopaedic care has undergone changes in its own right.

At my practice these are the changes that we have instituted guided by the SAOA, SASSA and NICD:

1) We have cancelled all elective surgical procedures pending further advise from the bodies above.

2) We have issues PPE and training to our staff (Amanda and Samke)

3) We have limited number of consultations in rooms to allow less waiting room patient build up

4) We have hand sanitiser on site and wash room facilities to ensure hand hygiene

5) We do not allow accompanying persons with patients unless a child or special needs patient.

6) We are still performing emergency and tumour based care at our hospital theatres
